Prayer is a ‘practice’ – something we do within a tradition and shaped by the learning and reflections of those who have prayed before us. And it is also something we learn, and need ‘practice’ in. Praying does not come naturally to most of us, and we are all beginners, strugglers and novices. On this page, we explore some ideas and insights available in the Christian tradition.
Practising prayer for Lent
Ash Wednesday
Today, we start the journey through Lent. This season offers us the chance to root our praying deeper and deeper in our living. We will look at different actions that we undertake each day, and reflect on how they might help us pray. The intention of this kind of exercise is to help us create habits of prayer.
But on this Ash Wednesday, we will start on the journey by reflecting on our intentions for Lent.
Take some time this week to be quiet and still. Allow yourself to become aware of what you would like from prayer, and how you would like your relationship with God to develop. Find some words or images that symbolise this for you, and offer them in prayer.
Also, invite the Spirit to do within you that which God desires.
End your time by thanking God for the invitation of Lent.
