Martin
Taylor
When did you first come to
Bloomsbury, and why?
I first came to Bloomsbury in 2006 with my wife Hilary. We were
looking for a Baptist church to which we could belong, and a
close friend recommended Bloomsbury to us. From the moment of
our first arrival for a morning service, we knew Bloomsbury
was right for us.
What
one aspect do you especially love?
There are many things about Bloomsbury that I like. People
are friendly and inclusive and are genuinely interested in
me and what I do. I feel accepted, and I don’t feel
I have to justify my existence or perform to anybody’s
standard. Great! Sunday worship is also something I particularly
enjoy.
You help us by
being our Tuesday Chaplain. What have you done in the past?
I trained for Baptist ministry
at Spurgeon’s college in the mid 1980’s, was ordained
in 1988 and was inducted as minister into Southfields Baptist
Church, London in February 1989. The next 16 years was spent
in serving the church and wider community. On the whole these
years were happy, and I enjoyed particularly creating opportunities
for church members to discover and use their gifts. My time
at Southfields ended in December 2005. Since then one of my
roles has been in working in Healthcare Chaplaincy at St George’s
Hospital Tooting in South West London.
What do you hope for the future
of Bloomsbury?
My hope and prayer for Bloomsbury is that it will continue
being a clear prophetic voice of inclusiveness that it is
already – to the Baptist family of churches, to the
wider Christian community and to those of little or no faith,
both at home and abroad. This is no easy task, but it is something
I believe God is serious about and wants for Bloomsbury.
