I suppose a sabbatical is a period of time when you get to set your own agenda to do things that help you to relax and re-take your bearings.

Having explored one or two avenues which have since fallen through, most of my time will now be spent on a couple of writing projects. One will be to produce the chapter of a book about Baptists' use of the Bible, to be published next year. (I will be exploring the way that Baptists do Bible study). I am also free to do some more work on a series of essays about worship in Baptist Churches. But I plan to give about 5 hours a day to having a crack at writing a historical novel. I've been wanting to do this for about 7 years, and I know that if I don't try it now then I know it will be at least another seven years before I get chance to try again!

Simon returns to Bloomsbury from 1 December.
