This has been a week of trying to get things ready - lots of preparation, planning and writing down half-shaped ideas in the hope that they might take on a more fully-fledged life (nativity plays, talks for services, pieces for magazines....)
It has all involved finding words for stuff; taking themes and ideas that are familiar, or at least half known, and trying to find ways of clothing them in words that can communicate importance, possibility, challenge, wonder.
I love doing it.
And the more I do it, the more I think this is what church as a whole is like; we are trying to find words - and therefore ways of living and looking - that express something, far bigger than the words, than our ideas, than our lives can contain. And this Christmas is - all that "bigness" present in a vulnerable baby. The Word becomes flesh
